MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14)

MP4 is a multimedia type that supports both video and audio files. It is also called MPEG-4, while its full name is MPEG-4 part 14. Regarding its technical features, the frame rate (for a custom file format) is located at 25 Fps, while the bit rate is 1536 Kbps. When it comes to the HD version, the bitrate is set to 6000 kbps, and the screen ratio is preset to 4: 3.

MPEG-4 part 14 files have the following peculiarities, which make them irreplaceable: They can support many types of multimedia such as video, audio, subtitles, and images as well as live streaming via the internet. All this the mp4 format can provide in excellent quality with relatively low file size.

The discovery and use of mp4 files is later, compared to the mp3 ones. More precisely, they came to the fore, in 2001, for the first time, as an ISO/IEC 14496-1: 2001 standard, which was 2 years later replaced by ISO/IEC 14496-14: 2003.

MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer III)

MP3 (MPEG-1 audio layer 3) is the most popular audio encoding method. The format was first published in 1991 but only gained popularity in the early 00s along with the growing popularity of internet use.

The MP3 format uses a lossy audio compression algorithm. When compressing, some sound signals are removed from the file, which is practically indistinguishable by the human ear, as well as those that can be played only on high-quality equipment. For example, a 4-minute song, of 40MB size in uncompressed WAV format, when converted to mp3 the corresponding file has a size up to 11 times smaller, with an average quality of 128Kbps.

Moreover, mp3 allowed us to download music from the Internet, store more music on our discs, as well as play it on mobile devices when speeds and capacities were still too low for Wav files. Nowadays, that our disks and mobile devices comfortably fit ample Wav files, using mp3 files we can still have over ten times more music in the same capacity, and significantly faster downloads.
